BD Syringe Pump Systems: Tips

  • Brochure Design
  • Informatics

Overview

Syringe infusion pumps are commonly used to administer IV drug therapy. However, due to factors including a lack of awareness and inappropriate use of these systems, there can be considerable risk to patients.

The Brief

The European Journal of Anaesthesiology recently published an article sharing 10 key clinical tips to tackle this challenge and improve patient safety.

Keen to help raise awareness of this important advice, the BD team were seeking creative support to distil this four-page article into an easily digestible and visually appealing two-pager.

It's all in the details

Along with the original article, the team at BD provided a few examples of infographic-style documents to help shape the look and feel. The article itself was text heavy and academic in style—our Design team’s expertise was needed to help the messaging pop and create visual clarity.

Our longstanding relationship with BD and proven experience of transforming often complex content into an accessible, reader-friendly format left us brimming with ideas for how best to go about this.

The solution

To get the ball rolling, our copywriter got to work condensing the copy and pulling out the key details for the shortened document.

Meanwhile, our Design team reviewed the infographics provided by BD for inspiration. Since we had just two pages to work with, our Designers recommended stepping away from the illustrative style of the examples and instead introducing iconography to complement the copy and enhance its impact.

With the copy approved after one round of feedback, our Design experts started building the structure. To achieve the visual clarity that was crucial to this document’s success, the team opted for a three-column layout and utilised their knowledge of the BD brand to introduce colour coding to make each tip jump from the page.

While the Design team were able to source some of the icons from the BD library, there were several that needed a brand new, bespoke design. The team worked closely with BD to create these new additions, making sure they effectively mirrored the message they were communicating.

Our flexible and initiative-led approach meant we were also able to offer advice to help the document reach an even wider audience. Whereas the initial brief was intended solely for print, we delivered two clearly labelled versions: one for print, including a QR code pointing readers to the full article, and another for digital, swapping the QR code for a hyperlink.

Result

The team at BD were delighted with both the finished product and the collaborative way in which we approached the process. The final document successfully demonstrates our ability to take lengthy, often complex information and translate this into a user-friendly, visually accessible solution.
